Build it and they will come, or so they say. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about websites here. Because websites require work in order to gain any traction. And with the internet infinitely increasing, the amount of work required to get noticed is growing.
So what are you to do if you are trying to grow your website and get more traffic? You’re going to have to put in the work. There’s no magic pill. I can’t tell you to do XYZ and boom, you’ll get traffic. The internet doesn’t work like that.
If you want to boost your site traffic, you’re going to have to do a combination of things. Sounds daunting, I know. But the good news is, the work isn’t hard. And it’s not necessarily time consuming. Although the more work you put into it, the better results you’ll see.
Let’s take a look at 17 things you can do right now to boost traffic.
1. Share old content on social media
You work hard to write blog posts, right? So then why do you let them gather dust in your post archives? Sharing old content on social media is a great way to not only boost blog traffic, but to help provide value to your audience.
Think about it this way, when you first wrote a post, how many people saw it? If it was 2 years ago, don’t you think there are people in your audience who would benefit from it? It’s likely they don’t even know it exists! So putting it in front of them via social media is a great way to help them out, all while increasing clicks to your site.
2. Add related links to popular posts
Using your popular posts to your advantage is called working smarter, not harder. Since your popular posts are already getting a ton of pageviews, it makes sense to harness that traffic and divert it elsewhere.
This can be done by adding related links to popular posts. Related posts give your readers additional context on a topic they’re already interested in. And because they’re already interested in the topic, they’re primed and ready to continue reading, so clicking over to your other blog posts is a no brainer.
Sidenote: adding links for related posts shouldn’t just be done in your most popular posts. Sprinkle a few related posts in each of your posts to maximize pageviews
3. Add a related posts plugin
Similar to how linking related posts works, adding a related posts plugin provides your readers with content they might be interested in. However, unlike manually linking to related posts, related post plugins do the work for you.
This is a huge timesaver as all you have to do is install a plugin and configure it. Then related posts are added to each of your posts. For a little bit of work, it has the potential to make a big impact.
4. Add social sharing buttons
People like sharing content that they found valuable. But if you don’t make it easy for them to do, they’re not going to. By providing them with social sharing buttons, you’re making sharing your content super easy. And when something is easy to do, it gets done.
5. Pin blog posts to group boards
If your Pinterest following is on the small side, group boards can really be a lifesaver. Group boards generally have more followers, which means more views when you pin your content to them. And if you join several group boards, you can really rack up some views.
6. Create Pin-worthy blog graphics
Pinterest is the place to be if you want your content to be seen. But thanks to its visual nature, you need to create graphics that stand out. So what makes a blog graphic Pin-worthy? Think tall images with easily readable text and an eye catching photo. The key is to create a graphic that catches people’s attention so they click on over to your site.
If you haven’t been creating Pin-worthy graphics before, I recommend creating a template in Photoshop or Canva so you can quickly create graphics for each of your future blog posts. But what about those posts that are already live on your blog? I would go back and add a Pinterest friendly image to each of them, starting with your most popular posts.
7. Share your link in Facebook groups
One of the best ways to drive traffic to your site is to get it in front of people. And what better way to do that than via Facebook groups!
Now before you start spamming Facebook groups with your links, make sure you read each group’s rules. Many groups have a weekly promo thread where you can share your latest blog post. If that’s the case, take note of when that is and set a reminder. Then share your link in the thread.
Some groups allow the sharing of links outside of promo threads, which is great. But let’s not spam your link just because you can. I’ve found the best ways to share links is when someone is asking a question that one of your posts answers. If a group allows that, go ahead and share your link. It’s providing value which is so much better than just sharing a link for the sake of it.
8. Provide value in Facebook groups
Facebook groups can be a great source of traffic (and clients), but you have to know how to get the most out of them. And how do you take advantage of them? By providing value, of course!
As I mentioned in the last section, share your link if it answers someone’s question. But don’t just help out when it benefits you. Answer other questions with your personal experience. Share things you’ve learned with the group. If you come from it from a standpoint of connecting with others, you won’t come across as spammy. And when you show up and add value, people will take notice, which means they’re more likely to recommend you or even just click over to your site.
9. Install a comment reply plugin (and reply to comments!)
One way to get people coming back to your site is to increase engagement. But how do you do that? Via comments! People are probably already leaving you comments. Use them to your advantage! Reply back and start a conversation.
However, just replying isn’t enough. That’s because WordPress doesn’t notify the commenter about any follow-up comments. So unless they’re regularly checking your site for a response, they’re not going to know if you replied to them.
That’s where a comment reply plugin comes in. A comment reply plugin gives people the option to subscribe to comments. That means that when their comment receives a reply, they’ll be notified via email and can continue the conversation.
10. Put out a call for guest posts
Guest posts are a wonderful thing, for many reasons. Not only do they save you time and help fill gaps in your content, but they also have the added benefit of boosting your traffic.
Your guest poster has their own audience that they’ve been growing and cultivating. And when someone writes a blog post for another blog, what do they do?
They share it! Or at least they should.
And since your guest poster and you have access to different people, when they share the post they wrote for your blog, your site is getting in front of fresh eyes. Many of those new people now know you exist and may become a follower of yours. And the more people that know and like your stuff, the better it is for your site’s traffic.
11. Pitch guest posts
Similarly to having other people write for your blog, you should go out there and pitch some ideas to other bloggers. Getting your content on other websites gets your name (and link) in front of more people, which will at the very least give your site a much needed traffic bump.
12. Comment on other people’s posts
Commenting on other people’s posts is such an old school blogging method, but it’s worth mentioning because it works.
In most cases, when you leave a comment on someone’s blog, they’ll click on over to your site to see what your about. Boom, instant traffic boost!
But more importantly, commenting on other people’s posts is a form of networking. The more you do it, the more recognizable you are to them. And when you’re recognizable, you’re more likely to get recommended for your services. Or your posts will be shared when someone they know is looking for information on a certain topic.
13. Write a roundup post
Roundup posts are some of the most valuable posts out there, but sadly I don’t see them around too much. A roundup post is a list of your blog posts based on a certain topic. So for example, a social media marketer can do a Twitter roundup and include all of their best Twitter posts.
So now not only are they linking to previous blog posts (which boosts traffic), but they’re also providing tons of value. Making those posts accessible in one, easy to access location is super helpful.
In order to make these roundup posts the most effective, don’t just make a list of links and call it a day. Provide a summary for each post in addition to its link. Remember value!
14. Write a super valuable post
Speaking of value, by far one of the best ways to increase your site’s traffic is to write an incredibly valuable blog post. In fact, you shouldn’t just stop at one. Each and every blog post should be as valuable as you can possibly make it.
When you write a blog post that has lots of value, people are more likely to find it helpful. And when you solved their problems, what are they going to do? They’re going to share it!
But beyond that, Google loves valuable content. Why? Because that’s their job! As a search engine they want to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Valuable blog posts are more likely to do that. And since Google want to prioritize quality content, you’ll be more likely to land near the top. And we all know what being at the top of Google means.
15. Send an email to your list
How often are you using your email list? If you haven’t used it in awhile, now’s the time to send out an email.
If it’s been a very long time, maybe re-introduce yourself and share some of your best content. Otherwise, just a general check in with some links to recent posts will work well. Since it’s likely people don’t have your site bookmarked to check daily, sending an email will remind them you exist (and provide them with value in the form of your blog posts).
Now if you haven’t been regularly sending out emails, now is the time to start doing so! Hitting people’s inboxes on a weekly basis keeps you in the front of their mind. Plus, it’s a great way to let them know what you’re up to (and get them clicking over to your site).
16. Create an irresistible opt-in freebie
Opt-in freebies, or lead magnets, are often used as tools to grow your email list. After all, they’re the incentive people receive once they’ve signed up for your list.
But an added benefit of an opt-in freebie that is irresistible to your audience is that it boosts traffic! Think about it this way, when you’re promoting your freebie, you’re essentially telling people to go to your site in order to get access.
And if you’ve truly created a freebie that your audience drools over, then odds are they’ll like some of your other content on your site. So not only have you grown your email list, but you’ve also increased your traffic.
17. Promote your content
Lastly, we have perhaps the most obvious tactic to boost blog traffic: promoting your content. And while you might be quick to dismiss it if it hasn’t worked in the past, I think it’s worth revisiting.
Promoting your content on social media is still a quick and easy way to get your content seen. If you haven’t seen much in terms of results, there are 3 things you can do.
1) Put the social back in social! Don’t just tweet your links constantly and expect people to click. Take some time and reply to people and form connections. Being active makes it more likely that people will notice the content you do promote.
2) Write better copy. Promoting on social media isn’t as simple as you think. You want your social copy to really draw people in. What would make them click over? Write that!
3) Share other people’s content. When you do a favor for other people (in this case sharing their content), they feel indebted to you. So what do they do? Share your content! Now this isn’t going to work every single time, but I’ve found that the more I share other people’s content, the more likely they are to share mine.
Remember: Boosting traffic takes time. There is no quick fix.
Now that you know 17 ways to boost your site traffic, I bet you’re just itching to give them a go and see your traffic skyrocket. While many of these techniques can give you an immediate boost, unless you consistently provide value and market yourself, your numbers are just going to drop. For a long-lasting traffic boost, incorporate these tips into your daily, weekly, or even monthly routine. The key is consistency here. Keep it up and you’ll see your traffic increase consistently.
